Each month in 2021, Better Car People spotlights one dealership and a local charity of their choice through our new Gratitude Campaign. Better Car People donates $1,000 to the charity in the name of the dealership in the hopes of helping the local community and spreading the word about the specific charity.
In May, Better Car People and the Gratitude Campaign were delighted to highlight Applegate Chevrolet and their charity the Shelter of Flint.
Dealer Partner: Applegate Chevrolet

What is the Shelter of Flint?
The Shelter of Flint began in 1983 as an emergency shelter for battered and abused women and has since continued to add services and outreach to the community. The Shelter of Flint currently works with men, women, and children and provides services to the homeless and hungry in the area.
“Shelter of Flint doesn’t merely provide temporary shelter. Our holistic approach gets at what prevents families from successfully staying in a home of their own. Our staff coaches clients so they can achieve independence,” according to Shelly Hoffman, Development Director for the Shelter of Flint.
In a time where more people than ever have found themselves out of work and needing assistance for re-housing, the shelter assisted in guiding, educating, and providing basic needs, and providing long-term stability for individuals and families.
Why Applegate Chevrolet partners with the Shelter of Flint?
Applegate Chevrolet has a heart for their community, and Susan Applegate, owner of Applegate Chevrolet was looking for ways to help support the community in times of need.
“Applegate Chevrolet has a long history of giving to the Flint Cultural Center and the United Way, along with various kids activities and sports. In the face of 2020 we, as with the nation, were on hold. With no big events to sponsor, I looked into the community and found various organizations focused on hunger and homelessness that we’d given to indirectly in the past and were struggling. Their websites and phone lines were crashing with demand. Shelter of Flint stood out because they work to shelter and stabilize homeless families with kids.”
Applegate Chevrolet worked indirectly with the Shelter of Flint previously, but with need and demand at an all-time high, Applegate decided to donate directly to this incredibly impactful community organization.
“We’ve just really started working with them but giving back to the community is in our DNA. United Way, Toys for Tots, F.I.S.H. are all local organizations we work with every year in a straight donation. Getting the feedback this year is the difference. These organizations are overwhelmed and so appreciative. In a normal year, there are folks in need. In 2020 the organizations assisting these folks were desperate. We all feel so lucky to be able to assist” stated Susan Applegate.
